Standard 6: External Development Leadership
School executives will design structures and processes that result in community engagement, support, and ownership. Acknowledging that schools no longer reflect but, in fact, build community, the leader proactively creates with staff, opportunities for parents/guardians, community and business representatives to participate as “stockholders” in the school such that continued investment of resources and good will are not left to chance.

Element 6a. Parent and Community Involvement and Outreach: The school executive designs structures and processes which result in parent and community engagement, support and ownership for the school.
The artifact to the right is a mock leadership issue that I had to opportunity of addressing during a formative assessment day. Real-life scenarios such as these have aided in shaping my knowledge of how to interact with students, parents/caregivers, faculty, and other stakeholders in the community. Everyday at school is different, and as administrators we must always LISTEN and be ready to address situations that arise in an EQUITABLE manner, while facilitating the best possible resolution. By recording these interactions--like we often ask teachers to do--I am able to reflect on the things that I did well and the areas where I need to improve. |

It is key to coordinate events to engage parental support. These events include things like curriculum nights, student-led conferences, spaghetti nights, and dances. The artifact to the right is a flyer that I created for the daddy/daughter dance. Both parents and students were excited to dress up, take pictures, play games and dance the night away! The local newspaper was also invited to document this special occasion!

Element 6b. Federal, State and District Mandates: The school executive designs protocols and processes in order to comply with federal, state and district mandates.
Part of our role as school administrators is to ensure that we adhere to guidelines imposed by the district, state, or federal governing bodies. The artifact below is an email request from the GCS Transportation Services Manager to comply with School Bus Safety training requirements.
The artifact below outlines the email I sent to our staff to make sure that all students viewed the required bus safety videos. Upon completion, each teacher turned in a signed verification form to document that their students saw the videos.
In addition to videos, students were required to go through a bus safety drill so that they know how to safely exit through the rear of the bus. To ensure that this process ran smoothly, the Transportation Services Manager and I conducted drills with every class at the start of their recess. At the completion of all drills, I turned in documentation to verify that we complied with the requirement.
Maintaining the safety of our students is a top priority. Sometimes that means simply making sure that students know what to do in the event of an emergency situation. One of my duties is to make sure that we adhere to the monthly fire drill schedule in accordance with state guidelines. I coordinated two fire drills during the first two weeks of school. Thereafter, I schedule a monthly fire drill, so that students and staff are continually reminded of what to do if this situation should arise.
The artifact below is acceptance of an invite that I sent out to the team members who assist with fire drills. Each person covers a designated area so that they can let me know their portion of the building is cleared. We communicate over radios so that I know when to stop the timer for the drill.

The artifact is a memo outlining the due dates for monthly drills. Each drill is timed and documented in our files. |
